Making Room for Darkness in the Season of Light

It’s that time of year when the world is shouting its dizzying and persistent message of JOY! But what’s a broken heart to do during this time when the calendar insists we embody everything hope-filled and joyous? Where is there room for grieving everything lost and changed? Where is the space for disappointment when hope seems less of a promise and more like a shiny new toy that could not offer contentment? Reality often means our hearts are battered and scarred, not up for the season that’s screaming at us to feel good about everything, asking us to suspend reality a while so we can wear our happy masks. It’s okay if you hear more silence than music this season; choose solitude over festivities, or if your tears outnumber the cookies you bake. As you honor your truth, remember another one: that shadows cannot exist without a source of light and like all seasons, this one too, will pass.
